the kizikula story

kizikula began as a personal project between childhood friends: a piece of land on Zanzibar’s quieter coast, a few houses for friends and family, and a shared dream of returning one day. It grew slowly into an intimate hotel shaped by the farm, the ocean and the people who live and work here.

There is room to be private, and room to come together—for long breakfasts, swims, sunset drinks and meals drawn from the land around you.

Breakfast is included with every stay. Lunch is relaxed and available through the day. Dinner changes with the season, the harvest and the catch. Filter coffee is taken seriously; drinks at sunset are built from the garden.

the farm

the hotel is part of a living farm

A permaculture farm feeds the kitchen. Blackwater becomes biogas for cooking. Rainwater is harvested, part of the electricity comes from the sun, and the buildings are made of coral stone and handcrafted timber that breathe with the climate.

our story

a communal home that became a hotel

kizikula began with two childhood friends, one with Zanzibari roots, who grew up together in Dubai and imagined one day returning to Zanzibar. When land became available on the quiet coast of Kizimkazi early in their careers, they bought it. Years later, a few houses for friends and family gradually became a small hotel.

The family owns the place and lives with it daily. The idea has never changed: a communal home, with ample space to meet your neighbours and just enough privacy to be inspired by the nature around you. Nine rooms grew — slowly, thoughtfully — into nineteen, each inspired by a muse: people whose stories, ideas and creative lives shaped the owners and the spaces themselves.

The architecture, by CASE Design, is shaped by Zanzibar first — coral stone, handcrafted timber, deep shade — and by a wider set of creative influences carried home from elsewhere. Growth here is deliberate: the intention is to remain intimate, known by name, fed with intention.
